We come to work as whole people, skills, thoughts, beliefs, perspectives, behaviours and emotions.

In the workplace, emotions have often been dismissed as distractions, deviations from the tasks or an insinuation is placed that emotions are a fault of the individual in their professionalism however, in truth they are highly valuable sources of data.

Emotions reveal what people care about, where pressure points exist, and how change is impacting the individual and the team. Emotions are evidence that your people are still engaged and care about their work.

Wise leaders don’t ignore these signals; they listen with curiosity and respect, recognising that emotions often surface, what logic alone cannot.

When leaders respond to emotions with empathy and attunement, they create psychological safety and strengthen trust and connection.

Listening to emotions doesn’t mean indulging every feeling, it means treating feelings as information to guide better decisions, deepen connections and explore the opportunity to build resilient teams.

As a leader you may at times need to support your teams to co-regulate, this is often the pain point for a leader if they do not excel in regulating themselves. Be honest, if you don’t know how to assist, you are still able to provide support by simply being with that person and giving time and a safe space, for them to regulate themselves. You can then refer the support mechanisms of your business to follow up further assistance. To follow up, explore some professional development for yourself in supporting and attuning others. A great example is completing a mental health first aid course.

Leaders who view emotions as data gain insight into both people and systems, making their leadership more adaptive and human.

🍃 Emotions signal what matters most to people and teams

🍃 Wise leaders listen to emotions as valuable workplace data

🍃 Responding with empathy fosters trust and psychological safety

🍃 Emotions guide better decisions and stronger connections

🍃 Ignoring emotions risks missing key insights into team wellbeing and begins to create disconnection

🍃Learning how to regulate emotions is a skill not an innate ability, be compassionate

Reflective questions to ponder:

⭕ Do I treat emotions as distractions or as data to learn from?

⭕ Am I comfortable co-regulating emotions with my team?

⭕ How do I show my team that their feelings are heard and valued?

⭕ In what ways could listening to emotions make my leadership more insightful?
