Psychological safety is the soil where trust, creativity and progress grow

Psychological safety is not a soft or new concept, it is the foundation of how people show up, contribute and grow in aligned, collaborative and professional ways.

When people feel safe, they are more willing to speak up, share ideas, challenge respectfully and take learning risks to achieve aspirations.

Without it, energy shifts from contribution to self-protection and over time becomes poor culture.

Like soil in a garden, psychological safety is often unseen but always felt. It holds the conditions that allow trust to take root, creativity to emerge and progress to be sustained. When the soil is healthy, growth happens naturally. When it is depleted, even the most capable individuals struggle to thrive.

Psychological safety is created through everyday leadership behaviours. It is built in how leaders respond to mistakes, how they hold tension, how they invite voice and how they model regulation under pressure and how these same behaviours are fostered in their people and teams.

Psychological safety is created through language, practice and environments that work together to support positive and respectful relational interactions and conditions.

When Psychological Safety is strong:

·         Shared thinking and open conversations occur daily

·         Willingness to take risks and learn something new is normal practice

·         Accountability without shame supports workplace learning

·         Mistakes are learning opportunities not punishing sticks

·         Trust is given first, rather than earned

·         Individual strengths are in sight and utilised

When Psychological Safety is weak:

·         People are silent rather than contributing

·         Silent grudging occurs through eye rolling, big sighs, closed body language, irregular attendance, disrespectful language, carpark gossip

·         Role descriptions are out of date

·         Role clarity has task creep, that is not addressed

·         Unacceptable behaviour is ignored and if someone calls it out, that person is targeted

·         Values are ‘talked’ but clearly not ‘walked’

Psychological safety is the soil where trust, creativity and progress grow

Psychological safety does not weaken standards; it enables them through clear boundaries. It creates an environment where people can meet expectations because they are not managing fear alongside their work. Staff focusing on emotional labour will always reduce workload, progress and culture, this is natural self-preservation. In this way, psychological safety is not separate from tasks, teamwork or progress but central to it.

🍃 Psychological safety may be a WHS responsibility, but is every HR team, employee and leaders' baseline of conduct and expectation.

🍃 Safety creates the conditions for trust, creativity, performance and workplace culture

🍃 Leaders directly influence psychosocial risk through behaviour, what they do, who they are and what they speak up and don’t speak up about.

🍃 Speaking up in a respectful manner, is a sign of safety, in an organisation not disruption

🍃 Culture is shaped by what is safe to say and do, not EVP’s (Employee Value Propositions)

Reflections to ponder:

⭕ Where might psychosocial risks be present due to silence, fear or unclear expectations?

⭕ How do your responses to mistakes influence trust and learning?

⭕When was the last time you included your staff members job description in their annual professional development plan, ensuring it was relevant, accurate and reasonable?
