Be the leader you needed

Many of us carry memories of leadership that shaped us, the moments where support was absent, voices were dismissed, or pressure was handled in ways that created distance rather than trust, disconnection rather than connection.
These experiences stay with us. Not just as memories, but as internal reference points that quietly influence how we lead, respond and relate to others.
To be the leader you needed is not about correcting the past, leading out of reaction or unresolved trauma but rather, leading from choice.
It’s about becoming conscious of who you are as a leader and how you choose to lead.
Reflecting on the moments that felt misaligned, unsupported or unsafe and choosing how a different response or action might have landed.
Emotional intelligence plays a critical role here, allowing leaders to recognise inherited patterns and convert them into intentional behaviours that align with who they want to be.
Many people have experienced leadership that looked like:
Being told to “just get on with it” when support was needed
Having mistakes highlighted or belittled publicly, rather than explored constructively
Feeling unheard or dismissed in conversations
Experiencing silence or avoidance during conflict or simply when a task has been issued with no clarity, support or follow up
Working under pressure without clarity, care, acknowledgment or openness, to further clarifying conversations

These moments often shape internal narratives about safety, voice, belonging and mattering. Without reflection, these narratives are unconsciously repeated. With reflection, they become powerful data points for growth.
To lead differently requires awareness, insight and action. It means noticing where past experiences are influencing present behaviour, and choosing responses that create safety, clarity and connection rather than fear or distance.
Without reflection: Past experience → Unconscious pattern → Repeated behaviour
With reflection: Past experience → Awareness → Choice → New leadership pattern
We often expect a different outcome without changing our patterns (practices), then wonder why the outcome is the same it’s not the task, it’s the culture around the task.
When leaders consciously shift their patterns, they don’t just change their own behaviour, they change the experience of leadership for others. Reflective leaders create environments where people feel supported, heard and able to contribute without fear, this is true belonging and mattering.
🍃 Your leadership is shaped by what you experienced, it is transformed by what you choose
🍃 Awareness turns past impact into present insight
🍃 Emotionally intelligent leaders respond, they don’t repeat
🍃 Small behavioural shifts create significant cultural change
🍃 Being the leader you needed builds trust, safety and growth through vulnerability, role-modelling and shows the real experience of being human.
Reflection to ponder:
⭕ What leadership experience shaped you most (positively or negatively) and how is it showing up in how you lead?
⭕ Where might you be repeating what once frustrated or limited you?
⭕ What would it look like this week to be the leader you once needed?
